Linux - ready for the mainstream ?
Is free software ready for the mainstream? Has Linux progressed far enough in its evolution to be a practical desktop environment for those who don’t have degrees in computer science? Can a user really just switch off Windows or Mac and be as productive on a completely open source operating system?

Since I had of run of hardware failures on my aging PC in January this year, Windows XP stubbornly refused to repair or re-install. I happened to try my old Linux Mint 9 and to my surprise many of the apps run better than my Windows apps – mail, web browsing, DVD burning, video conversion, web site authoring … All work well.
